Root Lessons

· NO. 01

She’s real to you. Is she real on the page?

Your main character has lived in your head for months, so it’s easy to miss what never made it onto the page. This lesson gives you three questions to check. Who is she, in a sentence or two? What drives her, beyond the goal itself? And what’s holding her back, in a way the reader can actually see? There’s a quick example with a wedding planner who hasn’t had a day off in six years, and one question to take back to your draft. Could a reader answer all three after chapter one?
